II. Narrative Description of Community


Data From KidsCount

Of the 30,639 residents in South Kingstown, RI, 5,416 of them are children ranging from eighteen years of age and under. Comparatively speaking, South Kingstown’s population of children makes up only about 2.4% of the total population of children in the entire state of Rhode Island, which is 223,956. Only 7% of the children of affluent South Kingstown, where the median income is a striking $104,257, live below the federal poverty threshold. In the entire state of Rhode Island, where the median income is $67,239, 16.7% of the children live under this threshold.
Economic Well-Being Indicators


South Kingstown is a relatively affluent community. Only 556 children are on food stamps compared to the astonishing state-wide number of children using food stamps, 63,783. In addition, 20% of South Kingstown children and 36% of Rhode Island children in total participate in the School Breakfast Program, which provides federally subsidized breakfasts to children in schools and childcare facilities. Also, 1% receive cash assistance in South Kingstown and 5% receive it state-wide.
Health and Safety


Medical Assistance is not in high demand/need in South Kingstown like it is throughout the State of Rhode Island for children under nineteen. 1,018 children of South Kingstown need it, and 93,691 children of Rhode Island need it. South Kingstown, RI is a small community with an area of only about 79.8 square miles. It neighbors Narragansett and North Kingstown, and is only a few miles from the water. It is part of Washington County of Rhode Island. It is a highly developed area. It has neighborhoods, apartment complexes, schools, stores, restaurants, the University of Rhode Island, and much more.
